Publishers to put age guidance limits on books

J.K. Rowling joins protest of age guidance limits on books

Harry Potter author JK Rowling is joining hands with joined rival fantasy writer Philip Pullman in a bid to block plans by publishers to put age guidance limits on books.

Pullman is just one of the authors and illustrators livid about the move, which would see kids' books getting age limits rather like what the movies have today.

Do you have any thoughts about age guidance limits on books?

My thoughts are that its bull, there are some books (Ok so a lot) that are inappropriate for kids, but that doesnt mean they need to have limits in place. Kids should be able to read whatever they choose, what about little kids who are more advanced in reading, will this mean they are not allowed to pick up certain chapter books? And how would they enforce it anyway? What would happen to libraries :o
I am fully against any limits on books!

And what do you say to the fact that many kids don't read nearly 1/2 as much as the generation two decades ahead of them? Would you only have them read what grabs their eyes? Can you tell me what that would be for teen girls versus teen boys.

Nothing would happen to the libraries. Many already have a system in place. Mere content in a library is a huge turn-off for many younger readers.

What they're talking about, from my understanding of it isn't something to KEEP kids from reading -- it is to HELP them to read by allowing parents and teachers to know a book's reading age level spelling, comprehension, and vocabulary wise.
